The Life of a Freelance Digital Marketer.

Freelancing… living the absolute dream! But is it all that it’s cracked up to be?

I became a Digital Marketing Freelancer after graduating with a Postgraduate in Digital Marketing and a career in Project and Event Management. Freelancing has its pros and cons [like everything in life] but for me, I absolutely love it.

I officially started my business in March 2020, yep right before the pandemic hit Australia. To be honest, the timing was ideal for me as a Digital Marketer because digital technologies were more important than ever.

Over the last 18 months, I’ve worked with many businesses to help implement digital strategies, update or create a new website and build a loyal community on social media. All of these activities were crucial during a time when businesses were forced to close their physical door.

What is a freelancer?

A freelancer is a professional who is self-employed and works for themselves rather than committed to a long term employer.

What are the PROS?

  • You’re your own boss
  • You decide your hours.
  • You decide where you’ll work.
  • Every client is different, you’ll never be bored.
  • You really make a big difference helping clients on such a personal level. No big agency here.
  • Shoes optional.

What are the CONS?

  • That little thing we like to all income: It’s not fixed, there’s no one topping up your super, paying you when your sick or on holidays so ensure you set yourself up with the right buckets before you begin.
  • Competition, especially with marketing!
  • Isolation. This was a big one for me initially, I have since met some amazing people who have helped support me through mentorships and various groups. All online!

What makes me different?

It’s easy to let the imposter syndrome creep in when you work for yourself but there is one quote that I live by.

Initially, my clients were via word of mouth and referral which is incredible. In addition to this, I have worked strategically to refine my target audience, my service offerings and be authentic and clear with my messaging so I attract the right clients. For me, it’s not about competing with the big agencies it’s about being authentic, honest and meaningful so I can help small businesses who really need an industry expert to step in and help (without the agency price tag).

Over the past two years, I’ve had the pleasure of working with some amazing business owners who have been an absolute dream to work with. I pride myself on listening and truly understanding a client’s needs and their business. Marketing isn’t about replicating the same principle and tactics for each business, it’s about purpose-driven strategies that are specific to your business.

What’s my vision for my business in the future?

My vision is to help serve more business owners with accessible marketing services. I know particularly for startups cash flow is often no-flow, so I want to create opportunities for these businesses to work with me on various levels. I also want to continue developing handy resources that are up-to-date because as we know the digital landscape is forever changing. Something you were doing 6 months ago might not be providing the same return for you now.

Biggest lesson learnt?

Looking back over the past couple of years I have learnt so much about the industry and running a business. I know everyone will go through learnings as a Freelancer, and they will never stop. My tip would be to set yourself up with the right systems from the beginning. A lot of processes I was doing in the early days were a complete waste of time, now I can clearly see that. And secondly, and most importantly trust your gut. If working with a client doesn’t feel right, it means that they aren’t aligned to your values or your services. They aren’t for you, and it’s okay to say no.

Questions about Freelancing?

If you’ve got any questions feel free to send me an email. I’d love to help, I certainly don’t have all the answers but I might have something that can help you if you’re thinking about launching into freelancing.
